THRONE SPEECH REFERS TO REGISTRY AND PROPERTY RIGHTS - JUNE 3, 2011

Page 14: Canada's rural communities are rich in history and culture, and generations of rural Canadians have worked hard and played by the rules. They should not be the target of unfair laws. Our Government will act on its promise to introduce legislation to end the wasteful and ineffective long gun registry.
Page 12: Our Government has always believed the interests of law-abiding citizens should be placed ahead of those of criminals. Canadians who are victimized or threatened by crime deserve their government's support and protection, and they should have the right to take reasonable steps to defend themselves and their property when the police cannot be there to assist them. Our Government will reintroduce legislation to clarify and strengthen laws on self-defence, defence of property and citizen's arrest. BOWLING FOR UNEMPLOYMENT: Michael Moore, the high-profile American activist and filmmaker, has become a cheerleader of the Senate page who lost her job for her stunning protest against Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “For a young person to do that and to do it peacefully, and quietly and with grace, I thought it was a very powerful moment,” Moore told The Canadian Press on Sunday from New York. “Every now and then there is an iconic moment where an individual takes action, and it inspires others to think about, you know, what else would we be doing.” Moore has become 21-year-old Brigette DePape's most prominent supporter, posting a photo on his website showing her holding up a “Stop Harper” sign in the Senate chamber during Friday's throne speech.

Moore, famous for films such as “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11”, even posted a link on Facebook offering her a job after hearing that she was fired. The prominent filmmaker and left-leaning political commentator has been a leading voice against big corporations, gun ownership, the Iraq War, and the American health care system. He is a longtime critic of Harper's Conservatives, routinely urging Canadian voters to vote for another party... (Toronto Star – June 5, 2011)

FRIENDS OF FUR BID ROTA ADIEU: The long gun registry issue is the straw that broke the camel's back for Anthony Rota. Trust was a word used freely during the recent federal election campaign by the Michael Ignatieff Liberals. But the whipped vote cost many Liberal MPs their voters' trust. Rota and several other Liberal MPs were praised when they voted "yes" to killing the registry
during the second reading of Bill C-391. Rota spoke during the Fur Harvesters 2010 annual convention. I was one of more than 400 law-abiding citizens (hunters, trappers and outdoor enthusiasts) to give him a standing ovation for courageously taking a stand according to the wishes of his constituents, rather than toeing the Liberal party line... We trusted Rota would do likewise during a third and final reading. But a Liberal motion in the House of Commons to kill Bill C-391 passed 153 to 151. Rota chose to cave in to his boss and flip-flop his vote in favour of the motion. He was notably absent at the April 2011 Fur Harvesters convention, yet it goes without saying his flip-flop vote was the topic of many
unforgiving discussions. Many Canadian citizens expect our government to trust us as responsible
citizens, and part of that trust would be to get rid of this off-target and un-repairable long-gun registry. Bottom line is Conservative Jay Aspin, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other Tories demonstrated they understand the significance of voter-government trust. Hence many of us law-abiding gun owners who felt betrayed joined Aspin's campaign and worked hard to have Rota replaced. (Eldon Hawton, President, Friends of Fur -- North Bay Nugget – May 31, 2011)

HOT AIR IN INDIA: Shooters - ace and aspiring - can no longer use air guns, air pistols and air rifles for target practice without getting a proper licence, if they are not members of a military mess, club or association. The Delhi high court has quashed a 1962 government notification that exempted these arms from all the regulations and controls under the Arms Act, 1959, including the requirement of a valid licence. A Bench of Justice AK Sikri and Justice S Muralidhar rejected the National Rifle Association of India's argument that air guns, air rifles or air pistols used for target practice were not firearms as defined under the Act, but were merely toys and as such these did not fall under the purview of the licencing regime. "It is safe to conclude that air guns, air rifles, air pistols are not mere toys…and they are very much subject to the provisions of the Act, being firearms," the Bench said. On a petition filed by People for Animals, the HC had in 2002 quashed the July 13, 1962 notification exempting air guns, air rifles, air pistols from the requirement of licence. PFA had argued that these arms were used for killing or maiming animals and birds. (Hindustan Times – May 31, 2011)

NRA WATCHING OBAMA'S SLEIGHT OF HAND: If you’re one of the nearly 71 million Americans who live in the four southwest border states, some of your gun purchases could soon be reported to the federal government. If you don’t like that—and no gun owner should—read on, because this may be our first big head-on gun control battle against the Obama administration. The fight began with a bureaucratically worded “Emergency Notice of Information Collection Under Review,” published in the Dec. 17 “Federal Register”—the daily publication where all proposed federal rules make their debut. It announced that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives plans to require federal firearms licensees in the border states to begin reporting all transfers “of two or more rifles within any five consecutive business days with the following characteristics: (a) Semi automatic; (b) a caliber greater than .22; and (c) the ability to accept a detachable magazine.” In other words, a dealer would have to tell the government every time a deer hunter in Sacramento or Amarillo finds a good deal on a pair of semi-auto .30-06s like the popular Remington 7400. Some might ask, “Aren’t multiple rifle sales already reported?” The answer is a definite “No.” For many years, Congress has required dealers to report multiple sales of handguns—and only of handguns. According to one of the basic rules for interpreting laws, when the legislature specifies one thing, it excludes everything else. (This is the same principle your parents applied when they said you could have only a cookie, even if there were also cupcakes and pies on the table.) For months now, anti-gun activists, members of the media and federal bureaucrats have been urging the BATFE to ignore this principle. As we’ve reported before (See “End Run,” Feb. 2011), the drumbeat began with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and its “Blueprint for Federal Action on Illegal Guns.” That document was an agenda of 40 ways for the Obama administration to impose new restrictions on gun owners and the gun industry, without bothering to go to Congress. FIREARMS BAN DOWN UNDER HAS NO EFFECT: New research shows that Australia's costly ban on semi-automatic firearms cannot be credited with stopping mass shootings in that country. Published in the peer-reviewed Justice Policy Journal, the study compared the occurrence of mass shootings (four or more people killed) in Australia with its close neighbour New Zealand. "Despite their very different gun laws, both countries have experienced almost identical periods of time with no
mass shootings," said International Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH) Chair Dr Samara McPhedran. In reaction to the Port Arthur mass shooting in 1996, Australia banned semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and pump-action shotguns. New Zealand still allows those types of firearms for hunting and target shooting. Neither country has experienced a mass shooting in over 14 years. "This does not support the view that prohibiting certain types of firearms explains the absence of mass shootings in Australia since 1996," said Dr McPhedran. Although mass shootings have historically been extremely rare in both australia and New Zealand, there was a 'cluster' of shootings in both countries in the late 1980s to mid-1990s. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, both countries experienced high levels of unemployment, followed by a decade of relative economic stability and growth from the mid-1990s onward. Dr McPhedran said that "The occurrence of mass shootings may reflect broader relationships between economic wellbeing and violence." The study controlled for different population sizes between the two countries. (www.ic-wish.org – June 5, 2011)

IF YOU WANT IT, HERE IT IS, COME AND GET IT: Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois is considering signing a bill that would prohibit state officials from publicizing lists of registered gun owners. The economics of crime suggests that such a list would put potential victims at a disadvantage and help criminals. Earlier this year, the state attorney general, Lisa Madigan, asked the Illinois State Police to make public its list of registered gun owners. Proponents of Ms. Madigan’s request say the Freedom of Information Act requires the state to release such information when requested. The police are concerned that a public list would discourage some gun owners from legally registering their weapon, and, as a result, the owner database would be less accurate precisely because it was public. A more accurate list, the police say, helps them protect officers and facilitates law enforcement. (New York Times – June 1, 2011)

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GETS THE FINGER: Since when is an imaginary game of shootout, with fingers as pretend pistols, a threat to anyone? Ask the staff at an elementary school in
Warwickshire, England, where two seven-year-old boys were disciplined for pointing their play-gun fingers at teachers who tried to break up the make-believe fun. The school ruled the gestures amounted to "threatening behaviour." Such a response is excessive and rightly has parents up in arms. The
overzealous approach takes the fun out of playtime and attempts to turn it into an exercise in political correctness. Primary schoolchildren have been playing versions of guns and soldiers for years without harm to their development. They've grown up to be well-adjusted, non-violent, peace-loving
adults... (The Calgary Herald – Editorial – June 2, 2011)
