Inside Anschütz

Any interest in seeing photos of inside the Anschütz factory in Ulm, Germany? I went over for a week for service training, the factory is quite something to see. They make just about every component on site. They even make all of there own screws...rolled thread, not cut. I was quite surprised by that!

What is the largest caliber they would make for competition? I thought somewhere along the line in biathlon competition a .30 caliber was scheduled. Am_I wrong?

OK, Sounds good. I will post away! Largest caliber they make for target is .22 which includes Biathlon. The hunting line goes up to in the series 1780 Caliber 9,3x62.

Didn't know they make such caliber.

On my side I'm looking to get this winter the MSR RX 22 Precision

Well, I guess I should provide a few details of what the photos are...

Barrels:

Raw steel banks once delivered to Anschutz, are stored outside for a minimum of 1 year before they are made into barrels. The reason is to allow the structure of the metal to rest. This is one corner of the yard where the steel is delivered and stored. In the photos above, the fresh stuff in the photo was recently delivered.



Once inside, the long steel rods are cut to length, ready to be made into a barrel







Not sure what the composition of the steel is, but I was surprised how little rust was on the rods, considering it was stored
outside for a year with full exposure to the elements.

Sorry! Its been busy.

More on the process of barrel making. One thing that stands out when your on the shop floor in the barrel area at Anschütz, there are not a lot of uber modern CNC machines working away. Most of the process on barrel making is very labor intensive, using the same machines that Anschütz have been using since the plant opened in the early 1950's. Keep in mind, Anschütz used to be in a town called Zella-Mehlis. Near the end of the war in 1945 this town was over run by the Russians and became  'East Germany". The original plant was completely destroyed and all the equipment, tools etc was carted away by the Russians. The Anschütz family fled to West Germany and reopened in the city of Ulm in the early 50's. Many of the machines in the barrel making process are from that period.





The couple of shots above is a general overall shot showing the machines used to drill the bore in the steel blanks, the tall machines against the wall are used to hone the freshly cut bore. The large one on the right in the top photo cuts the blanks to length.







Above is the machine that actually cuts the barrel. They mount 2 steel blanks on it and once set up, both barrels are cut at the same time. The drill bits zip through the steel pretty quick. I would say they cut through in less then 45 seconds.



Once cut, the barrels look like the ones above. Now the bore needs to be honed.






Above are the hones, and a closer look at the machines that hone the drilled bores. Once the honing is done, they
then go on to be rifled.

Ha ha ha yes, i noticed that too. They guys on the shop floor seem to be a bit behind.

But...the guys in the assembly area take things like calendars much more serious!
